Responsorium

soprano, countertenor, and organ / 15 minutes

Responsorium is a setting of the first six Tenebrae responsories for Holy Saturday. The Tenebrae service utilizes texts describing the suffering of Christ alongside the Lamentations of Jeremiah—the responsories are poetic adaptations from scripture and other sources to be sung between readings. The responsories for Holy Saturday have been historically set for choir, but I chose for this work to feature two soloists accompanied by organ. The piece draws stylistically from the sacred minimalists (Pärt, Gorecki, et al), and uses harmonic and vocal techniques endemic to chant and organum of the medieval period.
